Typically, a blanket should be no more than 15% body weight, but because the weight is distributed across a larger surface area, as a blanket gets bigger you can safely have more weight and receive the same effects. We can make any weight (up to 34 lbs usually) if it fits within the restrictions of the size. We can make any size that you like but usually stick to 40 inches wide so that we do not have to seam the fabric. Weighted blankets are most effective if most the weight is touching your body with very little overhang, which is why our blankets are people sized, rather than bed size. Couples tend to prefer individual blankets to suit their personal needs.
If you are in the Calgary area we suggest you come in to try out various sizes and weights in store to see what would work best for you. As well we have a try before you buy program where you can borrow a Hippo Hug weighted blanket to see if it is the right solution for you.
To figure out your best weight range, take your weight in pounds and multiply it by 0.05 and 0.15. This will give you a range that will work, as 15% of your body weight is the max you should consider, especially for kids. If you would like a personalized recommendation that includes extrapolating for the weight being spread across a larger surface area, please email us with your height and weight.

Keep in mind these are maximum weights and weight can very much be a personal preference. For general sleep issues, most customers prefer the 15-18 lbs range and to have their feet uncovered. For sleep issues in addition to anxiety customers tend to prefer to be at the top end of their weight range and to have full coverage. Seniors and people with low strength prefer to be in the 10-12 lbs range despite being able to go heavier based on body mass. Blanket weights over 12 lbs are not exact but within 1 lb depending on size. The heavier a blanket the harder it is to get it exact due to the weight of the fabric and batting. Blankets tend to finish heavier than the ordered weight.
Most adults who are not already using deep pressure to combat sleep and anxiety tend to choose between 15-18 lbs even though they can technically go heavier. This way they are not stuck with a very heavy blanket all the time and can fold it in various ways to increase the pressure when needed.
Children and teens tend to prefer to be near their maximum weight and if you are looking to have a blanket that grows with your children, consider the next size up and a few pounds above their maximum. If you want to order beyond the 15% body weight recommendation it is best to speak with one of our staff to be sure you are still in a safe range.
Seniors often choose the 40×50 size in 10-12 lbs. It is versatile for use while sitting and also in institutional beds. The smaller size allows for more independence in use and i t more manageable for people with low mobility and strength.
Most customers report that they don’t find their weighted blanket to be any hotter than a regular heavy quilt but if you have concerns about the heat we would suggest cotton on at least one side. Cuddle is a fabric made from 100 percent polyester that feels like fleece but won’t pill.
