We at Hippo Hug have a big goal for 2020, and that is to make even greater strides in implementing the regular use of medical grade weighted blankets into medical facilities and care institutions across Canada. As part of the mandate we set when applying for (and subsequently receiving) a prestigious Canada Women’s Entrepreneurship Grant, we plan to keep expanding from our current business-to-client structure to include an additional business-to-business arm of the company where we can concentrate on standardizing weighted blankets in the medical field. Watch for HH, which is our moniker for our medical grade weighted blankets line.
We are proud of the progress we’ve made so far in having our HH blankets introduced to hospitals, doctors’ offices, clinics, therapy centres, and seniors care institutions. And we are committed to working even harder. Medical grade weighted blankets have the opportunity to improve both patients’ and caregivers’ lives. They provide comfort and reassurance in times of uncertainty, helping patients to be calm and relaxed in order to properly receive the care they need.
The Most Important Person in the Medical System
Patient-centred care means that the most important person in the medical system is the one who is receiving treatment. This requires a stable, working infrastructure, excellent training, compassionate communication, and the ability to provide the best environment possible for healing.
But trying to get rest in a hospital-type setting or while receiving treatment can be very difficult. The lights are bright, it’s loud with strange noises, the surroundings are often inhospitable, and, of course, as a patient you are in discomfort and pain. That’s where Hippo Hug’s medical grade weighted blankets come in. Since the company’s founding in 2012 by our president Leslie Brooks, the amount of blankets made by Hippo Hug has gone from 60 in the first year to more than 2,000 in 2019. During that time we have been working on perfecting our standard customized blankets and developing and refining our multi-patient wipe-able blankets. Our standard customized blankets come in a number of different sizes and weights suitable for children, adults, and seniors. Our multi-patient blankets are made with a liquid-resistant material that can be wiped, or with a completely waterproof fabric. Both can be ordered with removable washable duvet covers.
We have blankets in use in medical institutions from coast to coast and would like to see them become completely commonplace. Hippo Hug weighted blankets are ideal for use in medical facilities as our proprietary weighting system allows for them to be moved around, folded and stored much easier than others on the market. Since they are carefully made by hand, they are also easier to clean and are much more durable.
Weighted blankets help in medical environments in many ways. They provide what is known as deep pressure touch stimulation, which was first recognized by Dr. Temple Grandin, PhD, a well-known autistic scholar. Grandin noted the benefits of applying a firm touch such as hugging, holding, and stroking, which stimulates the production of serotonin, relaxing and calming. Melatonin is also produced, which is known to help stimulate sleep. Deep pressure touch stimulation has also demonstrated an ability to decrease heart rates and reduce blood pressure. All of this is conducive to encouraging the healing process by assisting patients in getting the rest they need.
Simply put, weighted blankets help people calm down and rest so that energy can be redirected towards healing. Sleeping increases the production of growth hormones, and blood flow improves as well. Growth hormones aid in cell reproduction and regeneration, which helps to repair injuries. Increased blood flow provides more oxygen to injured areas, restoring energy and allowing for quality recovery time.

Medical Grade Weighted Lap Pads
In addition to our medical grade weighted blankets, Hippo Hug also provides medical grade weighted lap pads. These are ideal for use in therapy sessions and in seniors’ homes. The pocket is also useful for warming or hiding fidgety hands and storing electronics and valuables.
