Frequently Asked Questions

Most recommendations for weighted blankets are between 5% and 15% of body weight. A common recommendation is 10% body weight plus 1 pound. But because this recommendation is non linear (1 lb is a significant difference to a child but not much difference to an adult) Hippo hug uses the more consistent maximum of 15% and then extrapolates the pounds per square inch as the blanket size increases to give you a true measurement of you maximum weight. When you ask for a recommendation we will give you up to two sizes and up to 3 different weights.

There is also a quick chart here:

If you are ordering for a child consider getting the largest and heaviest blanket that you can afford so that it grows with your child. However you don’t want to get so large that is losing functionality. For an adult keep in mind that you want most of the weight to be touching your body with very little over hang, this is why we typically quote for blankets up to 40 inches wide.

When you contact us, provide your height and weight and we will give you at least 3 options that would work.

  1. Does the person who the blanket is for like small spaces?
  2. Do they like tight clothing?
  3. Do they enjoy tight hugs and lots of squishes?
  4. Do they curl up in a tight ball while watching tv or in order to get to sleep?
  5. Do they pile lots of blankets on the bed at night? Or keep a heavy duvet on in the summer despite being too hot?
  6. Are they unable to fall asleep without the weight of another person beside them?
  7. Do they stick their hands, arms, legs or feet between the wall and the bed?

If YES is the answer to any of these questions then a weighted blanket might be a viable solution.

You can read more about it here:

All blankets come with a fabric border. PLEASE NOTE: In order to get your blanket to you as quickly as possible, the border fabric choice is made by the blanket creator. It will always be coordinating and complimentary, but will most likely not be of the same fabric chosen by the customer for the front and back.

Read a first hand account here:

Hippo Hug works as quickly as possible to update fabric choices as they arrive, if you do not see anything you like please check back in a few days.

We do allow customers to provide their own fabric if they don’t see anything they like. You will need to contact us at to arrange this.

If you made an order but now see a fabric you like better feel free to get in touch about changing your order. We can often change the fabric choice right up until a few days before delivery.

The weights are specially designed disks. Learn more here (link)

For best results and longest life SPOT CLEANING is recommended. Past customers find they can significantly reduce the need to launder by using their blanket over a sheet or light blanket. You can make two covers for a 40×60 from a single twin duvet cover

  • The blanket has not been used.
  • It is shipped back to Hippo Hug within two weeks of you receiving it and you have contacted upon receipt to notify of the issue

Please note:

  • A refund will be issued only on the cost of the blanket, not the shipping fee.
  • There will be a 20% restocking fee.
  • Refunds will only be issued after we receive the blanket and its condition inspected. Blankets that have dirt/stains on them, smell like cigarette smoke or other strong household odors, have been washed or put in the dryer will automatically not be accepted upon return for a refund.
  • Blankets will experience wear and tear over time. Washing them often will increase the acceleration of this wear and tear. Patching and sewing up worn seams will be the responsibility of the owner. However, Hippo Hug is happy to work with you to fix any issue with the blanket during the first two weeks of ownership.

Some fixes that may help as your blanket ages over the years:

  • If the binding of your blanket has pulled away from the stitching
    • If you have a sewing machine you can stitch the binding back to the blanket’s edge or
    • You can use “no sew” glue to adhere the binding back to the blanket’s edge
  • If small worn spots/tears have occurred after washing
    • You can use “no sew glue” to attached the worn edges together or
    • You can appliqué a swatch of matching fabric over the tear or
    • You can use “no sew” glue to attach a patch
  • If the stitching has come loose
    • You can sew a new seam along the old one or
    • Depending on the area you could leave it as the outside stitching is only quilting the top and bottom layers together
