If YES is the answer to any of these questions then a weighted blanket might be a viable solution.

Our customizable weighted blankets provide a deep pressure sensation. Customers describe them as comfortable and heavy, however, unlike blankets weighted with pellets or aquarium rocks, our blankets do not retain heat and can be used with your own bedding. Our proprietary disk system ensures an even distribution of weight, with minimal noise as you move throughout the night. You can feel the weights but they stay where we have put them and there is no shifting of weight and little to no sound associated with the weighting system.

Like a custom engagement ring or made-to-measure tailored suit, purchasing a custom-made Hippo Hug weighted blanket is an investment. Whatever your tastes or needs are, our staff will work with you to create a beautiful blanket that suits you. And, unlike our other competitors, who bulk produce their blankets and drop ship them from overseas, all of our blankets are handcrafted locally in Calgary, Alberta. Hippo Hug prides itself on customer service and making sure you are happy. If you have questions you can speak to our staff in store or by phone. While you can find customizable weighted blankets for less online it really comes down to quality, customer service, customization and industry knowledge. Hippo Hug has been making weighted blankets for over six years.

All of the blankets are made with your choice of fabric. You can choose between cotton, organic cotton, cotton flannel, fleece or cuddle (100% polyester similar in feel to a silky polar fleece but won’t pill).

Hippo Hug weighted blankets are made by sewing two layers of batting together to create channels, then individual weights are dropped into the channels and seams sewn in the opposite direction. Once the weights are added the fabric of your choice is quilted on to the batting, resulting in three strong seams between each weight. Then the weighted blanket is finished off by binding with a coordinating colour using a machine stitch to ensure a strong hold.

Hippo Hug works as quickly as possible to update fabric choices as they arrive, if you do not see anything you like please check back in a few days. Or contact us to view any off cuts that may be large enough for your blanket.

We do allow customers to provide their own fabric if they don’t see anything they like. You will need to contact us via email or phone (587.356.0633) to arrange this.

If you made an order but now see a fabric you like better feel free to get in touch about changing your order. We can often change the fabric choice right up until a few days before delivery.

All blankets come with a fabric border. PLEASE NOTE: In order to get your blanket to you as quickly as possible, the border fabric choice is made by the blanket creator. It will always be coordinating and complimentary, but will most likely not be of the same fabric chosen by the customer for the front and back. If you have a specific preference please let us know when you order.

We use a unique and proprietary weighting system that involves specially designed disks made of ceramic coated metal.

Weighted blankets are all custom made to allow for all orders to be completed in a timely manner. Your blanket may take up to 6 weeks to complete but Hippo Hug always works as fast as possible, usually delivering in much less time. Current delivery time is 1 week.

Most recommendations for weighted blankets are between 5% and 15% of body weight. A common recommendation is 10% body weight plus 1 pound. But because this recommendation is non-linear (one pound is a significant difference to a child but not much difference to an adult), Hippo Hug uses the more consistent maximum of 15% and then extrapolates the pounds per square inch as the blanket size increases to give you a true measurement of your maximum weight. We can help you select the perfect size suggestion if you provide your height and weight.

There is also a quick chart here.

If you are ordering for a child consider getting the largest and heaviest blanket that you can afford (within their maximum weights) so that it grows with your child. However you don’t want to get so large that it loses functionality.

For an adult keep in mind that you want most of the weight to be touching your body with very little overhang. This is why we typically quote for blankets up to 40 inches wide.

Blankets will experience wear and tear over time. Like any textile, washing them often will increase the acceleration of this wear and tear. Patching and sewing up worn seams will be the responsibility of the owner. However, Hippo Hug is happy to work with you to fix any issue with the blanket during the first two weeks of ownership at no charge. After two weeks a nominal fee may be applied, depending on the work that needs to be done.

Some fixes that may help as your blanket ages over the years:

  • If the binding of your blanket has pulled away from the stitching
    • If you have a sewing machine you can stitch the binding back to the blanket’s edge, or
    • You can use “no sew” glue to adhere the binding back to the blanket’s edge
  • If small worn spots/tears have occurred after washing
    • You can use “no sew glue” to attached the worn edges together, or
    • You can appliqué a swatch of matching fabric over the tear or
    • You can use “no sew” glue to attach a patch
  • If the stitching has come loose
    • You can sew a new seam along the old one or
    • Depending on the area you could leave it as the outside stitching is only quilting the top and bottom layers together

Blankets will experience wear and tear over time. For best results and longest life SPOT CLEANING is recommended. Past customers find they can significantly reduce the need to launder by using their blanket over a sheet or light blanket. For extra protection you can make two covers for a 40×60 from a single twin duvet cover or have Hippo Hug modify the cover for you.

Otherwise:

  • First, check with your machine manufacturer before washing. Hippo Hug is not responsible for any damage that may occur as a result of washing.
  • Machine wash cold-delicate, do not over spin.
  • Lay flat to dry.
