Figuring out exactly what size of weighted blanket you need can be a difficult task. We put together our best tips to help make it easier.
When picking the size of your blanket, many people want to go as big as possible, or would like it to fit the entirety of your bed. We say don’t waste the weight! Not only are you paying for the extra length and width that you will not be using, any of the weights not touching your body are not giving you that deep pressure therapy you are searching for. Fit the blanket to you and not your bed for optimal pressure.
Keep in mind your personal preferences. Some users like to ensure the blanket can reach from under their chin to well over their feet, while others don’t like the extra weight on their feet, especially if they are a back sleeper. It can be uncomfortable to have the weight pushing the feet flat. Also think about the ways that you want to use your blanket. A 40×70 inch weighted blanket has great coverage but can be cumbersome to move from bed to couch or take travelling. Your regular bed duvet or comforter will still cover you so your feet or shoulders won’t be left out in the cold so you might consider a smaller size if you intend to use your blanket elsewhere.
For more information on why we don’t fit the blankets to beds, check out “Don’t Waste the Weight.” If you are going to be using the blanket for very specific areas of your body, such as your legs for restless leg syndrome, it is best to go with smaller sized blankets (30×40 or 40×50).
Children can go up in size from their exact body fit because they will still be growing. A weighted blanket is an investment and you want it to fit your little one for as long as possible. In general, most children ages 3 to 5 will be sufficiently covered by a 30×40 inch weighted blanket. A 40×50 inch blanket is good for ages 5 to 9 and a 40×60 inch for ages 10 and above. Most adults tend to choose a 40×70 inch even though a 40×60 inch would be good coverage for anyone under 6 feet tall. Keep in mind, with the blankets height that the head and neck do not need to be covered and that can account for 15 or more inches of your height.
If you still want to get the biggest size, the 45×60 and 45×70 inch blankets only give you an extra 5 inches in width, and our 40-inch widths will typically finish 1 to 3 inches wider than their advertised size as we cut as little fabric off as possible when straightening the edges. The 45-inch width can also mean your fabrics could be seamed, or if it is a directional fabric it could be placed sideways?. If you are unsure if this will happen with your fabric choices you can contact us and ask. We will also get in touch if you do order a directional fabric.
