Hippo Hug weighted blankets participated in the resource fair for Autism Speaks Edmonton 2013 walk. Not only did I set up a table to introduce the Edmonton autism community to my weighted blankets and weighted animals; I put together a team of 12 people to fund-raise and participate in the walk!
I began my career in the autism community in Calgary, this is where I was first introduced to weighted blankets as a non-medicinal approach to calming behaviours in autistic people. Weighted blankets are still a surprisingly new approach to helping calm or reduce anxiety and behaviours. It is such a simple approach but I hope as more people learn about the usefulness of weighted blankets we will see everyone benefiting from this simple approach.
Autism Speaks is a great organization and there were tonnes of people participating in the walk and family fun day in Edmonton this past weekend. The initial numbers came in at $875,000 raised for Autism Speaks! Team Hippo Hug has raised $955 so far but mostly it was nice to get out as a family and meet new people and participate in such a fun event.
